The Altai Mountains are a mountain range in Central and East Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan come together.
The rivers Irtysh and Ob have their headwaters here. The Irtysh flows into the Ob, and the Ob flows into the Arctic Ocean.
In the northwest corner of the range, the Altai merge with the Sayan Mountains, which run north of the Altai. It then extends to the Gobi Desert, which lies south and east of the Altai.
The name “Altai” means Gold Mountains
